Well, Here We Are Again!
And somehow, you all still aren’t tired of me—I love that for us.
I know I have a lot of unpopular opinions, and I’m sure today’s topic is going to be another one of those, but that’s not going to stop me. Originally, I was supposed to discuss this on a podcast, but since I’m not sure that will happen, I figured I ’d share my thoughts here instead.
Let’s Talk About Modesty
Now, I know this isn’t the hottest topic around. Most people don’t like talking about it because it’s the complete opposite of what culture tells us we should be. We live in a world of sexual liberation, “It’s my body, my choice,” “strong and independent,” and “I dress like this for ME!” But if we take a closer look, we’ll see that these cultural mindsets contradict what the Bible teaches. Where the culture says "yes," the Bible is clearly telling us "no."
Now, I don’t want to sit here and bash anyone who may not dress modestly because we all have our crosses to bear. I was once barely dressed on my way to somebody's club in Albany Georgia, so I get it. I, too, have been guilty of this. I was once a girl of the world. In college, I wanted to go from sweet Apollo to sexy Apollo. I was always looked at as “too good” for certain things, and I loathed that status. I wanted to be seen as sexy for once (or so I thought). I wanted to have fun, too. But I didn't have the heart for that lifestyle—so I understand.
Now, in my 30s, I see that for me and how I am built it wasn’t worth it. I am way too soft for what comes with being sexy and I had more respect as the girl who was seen as “too good.”
Bible vs. Culture
Honestly, the culture has fed us so many lies that I need a whole separate blog post just to debunk them. We cannot be so immersed in the culture that we separate ourselves from the Word. Again, I am right there with y'all I was a smoking, drinking, tattooed, hot yoga, loc'd goddess, so I am talking to me too. This sometimes is the plank in my own eye. But for now, let’s talk about two common lies that relate to today’s topic.
1. Your Body Is Not Your Own
The idea of sexual liberation clashes with scripture—y’all already know that. I shouldn’t have to say this, but I will. The Bible makes it clear in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (ESV):
"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body."
Our bodies belong to God, and everything we do—including how we present ourselves—should glorify Him. When it comes to sexual immorality, the Bible’s stance is simple: RUN! (1 Corinthians 6:18). And if you’re out here trying to be sexy as a Christian… GIRL! Lol, you know better!
2. "I Dress Like This for Me" … But Do You Really?
We’ve all heard it—“I dress like this for me.” But let’s be real, do you really? The Bible warns against selfish ambition and tells us IN EVERYTHING we do, do it to give glory to God. Selfish ambition is described as something we shouldn't have because it leads to evil James 3:16 (ESV) and Philippians 2:3(ESV):
"Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves."
If our fashion choices are rooted in seeking validation, attention, or cultural approval, then who are we really dressing for? Modesty isn’t about restriction—it’s about honoring God above all else.
The Benefits of Modesty
Modesty isn’t just about what we wear—it’s about how we carry ourselves, how we speak, and how we represent the Kingdom of God. Instead of seeking validation from likes, attention, or fleeting approval, we find confidence in knowing that God cherishes us. There are so many major benefits to being modest and lowering yourself so that God can become higher in your life.
1. Modesty Shows Inner Confidence
1 Peter 3:3-4 (ESV): "Do not let your adorning be external—the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear—but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious."
True confidence comes from knowing your worth in God, not from external validation.
2. It Reflects Strength in Self-Control
Proverbs 31:25: "She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come."
Modesty shows self-control, self-respect, and a commitment to God’s standards rather than fleeting fashion trends.
3. Modesty Protects Others from Stumbling
Romans 14:13 (ESV): "Therefore let us not pass judgment on one another any longer, but rather decide never to put a stumbling block or hindrance in the way of a brother."
While everyone is responsible for their own thoughts, dressing modestly helps create a Christ-centered environment that minimizes temptation.
4. It Focuses on Inner Beauty
Modesty shifts the focus from outward beauty to lasting virtues like kindness, wisdom, and humility.
5. It Adds Mystery and Value
Let’s be real—something rare and valuable is not put on display for just anyone. Modesty enhances a woman’s depth and mystery, making her presence more meaningful rather than superficial.
6. It Aligns with God’s Will
Choosing modesty aligns us with God’s call to purity and wisdom. It also helps weed out people who only value outward appearances.
7. It Builds Stronger Relationships
A woman who values modesty attracts people who appreciate her for who she truly is—not just for how she looks. It fosters stronger marriages and friendships by prioritizing character over fleeting attraction.
8. It Sets a Powerful Example for Others
In a world obsessed with self-promotion, a modest woman stands out as a beacon of wisdom and grace. By embracing modesty, we inspire others to seek their worth in God rather than the approval of man.
Final Thoughts
If you’re a Christian, modesty isn’t just a fashion choice—it’s a heart posture. This isn’t about condemning anyone but rather shining light on God’s design for us.
Modesty doesn’t mean you can’t express yourself or enjoy fashion. It’s about intention. When you step out, ask yourself:
✅ Am I glorifying God with what I’m wearing?
✅ Am I representing the Kingdom?
At the end of the day, modesty is about honoring God. I encourage you to dig into the Word and seek His guidance on this topic.
As always, read your Bible for yourself, and let God lead you in truth.
Much love! 💛
